What to Expect on your MPR Retreat

We warmly welcome you to MPR.

Our retreats are an amazing experience, and so we wanted to share a few notes on what to expect, to make your stay as productive and proactive as possible.

Our mission is to empower you, elevate your music production process, and give you the tools and confidence to become more self-sufficient in the studio. Most importantly, we want everyone working together, collaboratively, every step of the way.

By the end of your stay, you’ll have worked shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow artists, as well as professional engineers, songwriters, session musicians, producers and mixers. This hands-on experience will give you invaluable insight into how professional records are made, from the initial idea right through to the finished track.

You are one of just 8 Retreaters, and we ask each of you to bring your favourite tune to work on during the week. While we can’t promise to fully produce and mix all 8 songs from start to finish — and realistically, that isn’t the point of the retreat — we can promise that you’ll be involved in the process.

The aim is to roll up your sleeves, get stuck in and learn by doing, alongside our professional team throughout the week. By being involved in everyone else’s productions, you’ll gain far more than you would by simply focusing on your own track. You’ll see different approaches, techniques and creative decisions, and learn how to apply them to your own music.

All studio areas are open and active throughout the retreat, and we encourage everyone to hang out, get involved and make the most of every opportunity. This isn’t a one-at-a-time situation where you wait for your turn to work on your track. Production is happening all day, every day, and you’re invited to be part of as much of it as you like.

We’ll work with you through every stage of the production process, and throughout the week you’ll be joined by Barny, Ian, Clay & Ollie.

All studio setups will be active for the duration of the retreat, giving you the freedom to move between sessions, collaborate, learn and create.

🚀 Arrival day - A relaxed welcome meeting to hear everyone’s demos altogether so we’re all on the same page!

🚀 Studio Day 1 - We will be working together in smaller groups to get each of your tracks prepped & ready for tracking.

🚀 Studio Day 2 - Further development of tunes. We will usually have a drum session player in for the day.

🚀 Studio Day 3  - Extra tracking & finishing off the recordings.. We again hope that everyone will hang out together & avoid just waiting your turn for your track to be worked on. We also usually have more session players in today to add to your tracks.

🚀 Studio Day 4 - We want to wrap up tunes today, so will be be adding final touched to your tracks and make sure you get great monitor mixes to take away, If it is this process that interests you, we recommend you make the most of that.. Then, after dinner, and a few drinks we will have a listening party to end the retreat.

Understanding the outcome

It is important for retreaters to understand that the mixes we deliver at the end of the week are monitor mixes not a professional mix from Barny would be for a commercial client. On the retreat 8 tracks being mixed quickly in one day to show you the process, so whilst we make every effort to make sure your tracks sound as amazing as possible, we hope you can understand & be realistic about expectations, having said that there are great aftercare options here -

Aftercare & Mastering

  • We can advise to the best of our knowledge how you can release and promote your track so you can go ahead and do it yourself

  • Once they come out if you agree we will proudly add your singles to our ‘MPR Presents’ Spotify playlist

We have two mastering packages available:

Option 1

For just £50, you can have anything we finish together during the retreat professionally mastered. You’ll receive:

  • The final mastered track

  • A mastered instrumental

  • A mastered a cappella

A great way to leave the retreat with your music fully finished, polished and ready to release.

Option 2

For £150, you can request final revisions to the track we worked on during the retreat, followed by professional mastering.

Once you’re home, take some time to listen carefully on different systems and make a note of anything you’d like tweaked — whether it’s a vocal level, a production detail, an arrangement change or anything else you feel needs that final bit of attention.

Send us your revision notes and we’ll make the requested tweaks before professionally mastering the finished track.

You’ll receive:

  • Your final revised & mastered track

  • Mastered instrumental

  • Mastered a cappella

This is the perfect option if you want the time and space to properly live with your track after the retreat, come back with fresh ears, and make sure everything is exactly where you want it before the final master.

As our many 5 star reviews endorse, you will leave our MPR Retreats with a much deeper understanding of the process of music production. You will feel empowered to continue your musical journey with more passion & more skills to do so.

Much love from MPR founders Barny, Chris & Jim.
